How to play Size It Up

  1. Compare. The black silhouette is the reference. It is at true scale and never changes.
  2. Resize. Slide anywhere on the board — or drag the grip, tap the ruler, pinch, or use the arrow keys — until the white silhouette looks right next to the reference. Zoom out if you need room.
  3. Lock in. The true size is drawn in red over your guess. Within 6% scores 100; twice or half the size scores 45; five times off scores 0.

The Size It Up animals game, animal against animal

Size It Up Animals keeps every round inside the animal kingdom: a wolf against a house cat, an orca against a penguin, a hummingbird against a honeybee. The black cut-out is the reference, drawn at true scale with a ruler above it. The white one is yours — drag it, pull a corner, make it the right size beside the reference, then lock in. The true animal is drawn over your guess in red, with the real number and how far off you were.

It is the same five-round daily as the main Size It Up game, with one change that turns out to matter a lot: nothing on the table is a bus or a tower to anchor against. In the Size It Up animals mode you are comparing two things you have only ever seen in photographs, never side by side, and that is where everyone’s sense of scale quietly falls apart. Size It Up Animals is free, needs no account, and refreshes at midnight in your time zone.

How to play Size It Up Animals

  1. Read the axis. Each Size It Up animals round names the dimension: length for a crocodile or a whale (nose to tail base for mammals), height for a giraffe or a standing penguin, wingspan for an albatross. Only that dimension is scored, so a whale that is the right length but drawn too fat still gets full marks.
  2. Count the reference. Ask how many of the black animal fit inside the white one. Two polar bears to a crocodile? Half a cat to a rabbit? Ratios are how the Size It Up animals game scores, and they are easier to feel than metres.
  3. Lock in and argue. The true outline lands in red. Within 6% of the true size scores 100; twice or half the size scores 45; five times off scores nothing. Five rounds from easy to hard, 1,000 points, and the same five Size It Up animals for everyone that day.

Why animals are the hardest Size It Up rounds

You know what a polar bear looks like. You have seen a thousand pictures of one, alone on ice, with nothing in frame to say how big it is. Photographed that way it reads as a large dog; beside a house cat on the Size It Up animals board it is a small car. A giant squid sounds enormous until it lies next to a sperm whale, the animal that eats it. An ostrich is a bird, so people draw it at chest height; it looks down on most basketball players.

The main Size It Up game gives you anchors — a bus is 12 metres, a door is 2 — and after a week you carry them around. Size It Up Animals takes the anchors away and asks a purer question: do you know how big living things are relative to each other? Most people find out they do not, which is exactly why this mode gets replayed.

The orca is the round people get wrong most often in the Size It Up animals game: it is drawn as “a big dolphin” when it is a seven-metre predator that hunts great white sharks. The ostrich is the second: nearly every player makes it human height, and it is a head and a half taller. The giant squid is the opposite trap — a famous monster that is, in fact, shorter than the whale it fights.

Every animal in the Size It Up animals library

Pairs in a Size It Up animals round are always within fifty times of each other, so a honeybee never faces a whale — but a honeybee against a hummingbird, or a house cat against a gray wolf, is exactly what this mode is for. Every silhouette is a public-domain or CC0 cut-out and every measurement links to its source on the credits page; when a size depends on which animal you mean — the bull, the average adult, the perched bird — the caption says which one you are looking at in that Size It Up animals round.

Tips for the Size It Up animals daily

  • Use the human. An average adult is 1.7 metres and turns up as a Size It Up animals reference often. A gorilla is that tall standing; a polar bear is that long lying down; an ostrich is a head taller.
  • Cats are the ruler. A house cat is 46 cm nose to tail base. A rabbit is about one cat; a fox is a cat and a half; a wolf is two and a half.
  • Whales come in three sizes. Orca 7 m, humpback 14 m, blue whale 27 m — each roughly double the last. Most Size It Up animals rounds at sea can be solved from those three numbers.
  • Distrust birds. Wingspans are wider than you think (an albatross spans 3.1 metres) and standing heights are shorter than you think (an emperor penguin is 1.2 metres).
  • Practise in Unlimited. Size It Up Unlimited draws from the whole library, animals included, with no daily cap. Twenty rounds there and the Size It Up animals daily stops feeling like a guess.
