Why an unlimited mode

The daily puzzle is deliberately scarce: five rounds, then you wait until midnight. That scarcity is what makes a streak mean something, but it is a terrible way to learn. Size It Up Unlimited is the practice room. Play twenty rounds in a row and you start carrying anchors around with you — a bus is 12 metres, a person is 1.7, a tennis court is 24, a blue whale is 27 — and the daily five stop feeling like guesses and start feeling like arithmetic.

It is also the mode for the people who arrive at the daily game, finish it in two minutes, and want more. There is no reason to send them away. Unlimited keeps the board open for as long as you like, and the running average at the top tells you whether your eye is actually improving or whether you are just enjoying yourself. Both are fine.

How Size It Up Unlimited picks its pairs

Pairs are drawn at random with the same rules as the daily game. The two objects are always within fifty times of each other, so you never face a bacterium against a planet with nothing to hold on to. The reference — the black cut-out — is drawn at true scale, with a ruler above it showing its real measurement, and the white cut-out is yours to resize until it looks right beside it.

Nothing you have seen in the last thirty rounds comes back, so a long run keeps changing. Scoring is the same curve as the daily puzzle: within six percent of the true size scores 100, half or double the size scores 45, three times off scores 30, and five times off scores zero. Because the error is measured as a ratio, there is no advantage in always guessing small — a tempting habit that the daily game quietly punishes.

Practise the hard ones

Some comparisons are hard for everyone. Anything against a planet: the Moon is 3,474 kilometres across, which is roughly the width of Australia, and almost nobody sizes it right the first time. Anything tall: people make towers too short and giraffes too tall with remarkable consistency. Anything small against something everyday: a tennis ball beside a smartphone is harder than it sounds, because you have never held the two together.

Unlimited is where you get those wrong enough times to stop getting them wrong. The reveal shows the true silhouette in red over your guess every time, with the real number and how far off you were, so each miss teaches a size you will keep. After a week of this, the daily puzzle changes character: you stop asking “how big is a gorilla?” and start asking “how many dachshunds is a gorilla?”, which is the question the board is really asking.

Challenge a friend on the same run

Any run can be sent as a challenge. The link carries the same pairs you just played, so your friend faces exactly the silhouettes you faced, with one attempt each — the reveal shows the answer, so a second try would be cheating. When they lock in their last round, both scores sit side by side, and they can send it straight back to you with a new set.

Unlimited is the natural home for challenges because the daily puzzle is already shared: everyone plays the same five silhouettes on the same day, so there is nothing to dare anyone with. A random run is yours alone until you pass it on.

Does unlimited affect my streak?

No. Streaks count finished daily puzzles only. Unlimited keeps its own best run and average, stored in your browser like everything else.

Are the objects the same as the daily game?

Yes — the same library, the same real measurements and the same silhouettes. The daily puzzle simply fixes five pairs for everyone; unlimited draws them at random.

Can I play Size It Up Unlimited on my phone?

Yes. The board turns portrait on a phone, you drag with one finger and pinch to resize, and the tab bar at the bottom keeps Play, Unlimited and Geography one tap away.

Is there a limit at all?

Only the library. With a few hundred objects and a rule against repeats, a run can go on for a long time before it starts to rhyme.
