How to play Size It Up

  1. Compare. The black silhouette is the reference. It is at true scale and never changes.
  2. Resize. Slide anywhere on the board — or drag the grip, tap the ruler, pinch, or use the arrow keys — until the white silhouette looks right next to the reference. Zoom out if you need room.
  3. Lock in. The true size is drawn in red over your guess. Within 6% scores 100; twice or half the size scores 45; five times off scores 0.

01 / A different kind of food quiz

Meet Size It Up Food & Drink

You know what a strawberry, croissant and coffee mug look like. But how large would they be beside one another? Size It Up Food & Drink puts familiar foods on the same board and asks you to trust your sense of scale.

The 60-object Size It Up Food & Drink collection mixes fruit, vegetables, bakery favourites, eggs, pasta and drink containers. These are named portions and selected product formats, not claims that every apple or mug has one universal size.

How to play Size It Up Food & Drink

Each Size It Up Food & Drink Daily has five rounds with a maximum total of 1,000 points. Rounds 1–2 score ×1, round 3 ×2, and rounds 4–5 ×3. Read the reference and the target’s selected portion or model, then resize the cream object against the dark reference.

  1. Read the selection

A medium tomato and a large apple are different reference portions. Open the measurement details to check the selected item and endpoints.

  2. Compare one distance

Think in halves or multiples. Drag a handle or use the size controls. Board zoom changes your view; object resizing changes your guess.

  3. Lock in your guess

Submit to reveal the dimensions and source explanation. Size It Up Food & Drink scores the linear span you selected.

03 / One outline, one named span

What Size It Up Food & Drink measures

Size It Up Food & Drink uses length, width, diameter or container height. A carrot runs from the top of its root to its tip; its leafy top is drawn for recognition but excluded from the measured root length.

An apple’s diameter crosses its fruit body. A bottle’s height runs from base to top. Flat foods and round bakery items may use labelled top-view diagrams; their surface texture is schematic. Size It Up Food & Drink compares those linear distances even when one is horizontal and the other vertical on the board.

For curved foods, follow the stated straight span rather than tracing around the outline. Size It Up Food & Drink measures the croissant across its outer tips and the pretzel across its long span, not along the rolled dough.

A carrot root-length marker excludes its leafy top; an apple diameter marker excludes its stem.
Read the endpoints in Size It Up Food & Drink. These enlarged outlines demonstrate measurement, not their relative sizes.

Common traps in Size It Up Food & Drink

Food changes with variety, growing conditions and preparation. Size It Up Food & Drink uses USDA serving-size descriptions for many foods, with the chosen portion named in the game. A portion reference is not a biological average.

A recipe, supplier or grower may give a range. Size It Up Food & Drink states the selected value in the reveal and identifies the range in the source note. A larger home-grown pepper can still be perfectly ordinary.

Do not substitute grams or millilitres for centimetres. Size It Up Food & Drink measures drink containers from base to top. A wider container can hold more liquid without being taller.

Size It Up Food & Drink comparisons

These Size It Up Food & Drink examples use the actual collection values. Each pair shares one linear scale, and the ratio divides the longer span by the shorter one. The examples are independent of today’s Daily puzzle.

A food size comparison is easier when you choose a familiar anchor. Size It Up Food & Drink lets you carry that anchor from a small cookie to a long loaf, or from a chicken egg to an ostrich egg.

A baguette reaches across nearly ten cookies.

Compare the baguette’s end-to-end length with the cookie’s outer diameter.

Getting better at Size It Up Food & Drink

Remember two anchors: the selected chicken egg is 5.58 cm long, and the selected can is 12.222 cm tall. In Size It Up Food & Drink, first estimate which span is larger, then how many times larger.

The outer edge matters. A doughnut’s hole is not its diameter; a wine glass’s bowl is not its full height. Size It Up Food & Drink keeps the stems, handles and empty spaces visible so you can practise reading the right boundary.

Try Unlimited after the Daily. Size It Up Food & Drink uses the same selected dimensions in both modes, giving you new pairs without changing what each entry means.

Sources behind Size It Up Food & Drink

Size It Up Food & Drink uses USDA SR Legacy portion descriptions, grower descriptions and named manufacturers’ dimensions. The source records distinguish exact specifications from approximate portion references and selected values within a range.

USDA entries are traceable by their NDB numbers in the reveal notes. Size It Up Food & Drink converts inches using 2.54 centimetres per inch; it does not infer a length from calories, weight or volume.

The Classic collection reuses existing project artwork and credited open-licence vectors. Size It Up Food & Drink uses simplified outlines, not photographs or exact product drawings. Their measurement markers and comparison scales are calculated from the game data.

09 / Questions from the field

Questions about Size It Up Food & Drink

Which apple does Size It Up Food & Drink use?
Size It Up Food & Drink uses a named USDA large-apple reference portion. Real apples vary. The game scores that selected portion, not every apple of every variety.
Does Size It Up Food & Drink measure drink volume?
No. Bottles, cans, mugs, glasses and teapots use container height. Volume labels identify the selected format; the amount of liquid is never the scoring dimension.
Does Size It Up Food & Drink include leaves?
Check the named endpoints in Size It Up Food & Drink. Carrot leaves and pepper stalks are excluded. Fruit diameters cross the edible body, while an egg uses its full shell length.
Are bakery items standard sizes?
No. Size It Up Food & Drink identifies a reference portion or a supplier’s product. A croissant or baguette from another bakery may be a different size. Source notes explain tolerances where given.
Do the citrus pictures show slices or whole fruit?
Size It Up Food & Drink shows orange and grapefruit centre cross-sections. Their outer diameter represents the selected fruit diameter, not slice thickness, circumference or the size of a wedge.
Are these comparisons today’s answers?
No. The Size It Up Food & Drink collection is static learning material. Today’s measurements are revealed after each guess, with dated answers kept in the separate Answers archive.
